San Antonio Mosquito Abatement Program

The City of San Antonio Metro Health Department provides fogging for adult mosquitoes on public property within the City of San Antonio limits when they receive a positive test for West Nile Virus. Testing is done on mosquito pools from March through October. Notices for mosquito abatement are published on their webpage here. The notice includes the date and time the treatment is scheduled and the treatment area. The treatment could be delayed due to rain and/or windy conditions.

Without causing an overreaction or alarm, the AABA Board urges members to be aware of the mosquito abatement program and take steps to minimize the impact to your colonies if they are located in a spray or abatement location. Steps include providing food and water to your bees, then covering hives with a loose cloth or tarp that allows air to flow, and screening the entrance for 24 hours if the hives are located in an impacted area. Be careful not to overheat the hives. You may decide the best course of action is to relocate your hives until you determine they can be returned to your apiary.

The San Antonio website includes abatement notices dating back to 2022. Beekeepers can review the same to see if their bee hive(s) were in a treatment area and what effect it may have had on their hives to determine the best course of action to take.

If you have bee hives in other municipalities you should contact those respective city offices for mosquito and vector control information.
